Why have Star Trek movies always had a lower ceiling than other longtime franchises?

Hi.

Hope you’re doing well.

Sure, movies like Insurrection and Nemesis were quite poor but given some of the recent Abrams movies were definitely more accessible for a casual audience (like me) and had production budgets not far from $200 million and especially since Star Trek is a longtime institution in TV and film with a loyal fan base and most people have friends who like entertainment (which many of these movies are, for 90-120 minutes of your time, every few years), it’s odd that franchises like Star Wars and Marvel can make billions but Star Trek has a ceiling.

Is it the IP itself, the reputation of fans, marketing, or something else?
