Gen Z vs Boomers in marketing- Help??
Hey all! I’ve just started a marketing job with a company that primarily focuses on Gen X and above. They want ideas for how to market towards Gen Z (Im gen z) but everything I tell them they think is inappropriate.
Example- We do text message campaigns. They asked me to write some texts out, using Gen Z slang, jokes, and basically anything that I thought would get the attention of someone my age. I made some that were corporate appropriate, but still on trend with the current social world. They reviewed them and were upset to say the least. I genuinely thought they were good, but they told me they were not what they had asked for.
Another example. I created a few tik toks for their page, ones that were again on the trends for tik tok. I sent them over and they didn’t understand them (which is fine, if I had to explain tik tok trends, I don’t think I could honestly) and were extremely hesitant to let me post them. I showed them a few examples of viral videos and told them mine were inspired by the viral videos and would likely do well with a Gen Z audience. They let me post them , but were still very apprehensive.
So here lies my question. How do you younger folks (Gen Z, Millennials) work with the older generations when it comes to marketing? I am tasked with getting more young people interested in our company, but my bosses don’t understand the trends and it is making meeting my quotas extremely hard. How do I work with this??
Edit: Thank you guys for the advice! I am currently writing a proposal for them with market research to help my case a bit. I appreciate you all!!
